Basic Hotel

The Malika Classic is a very basic hotel situated in a rather down market neighbourhood. The location is OK if you are with a tour group and have transport. Taxis are inexpensive and worth it as there are no attractive walks nearby. The hotel only serves breakfast but there is a very good Italian restaurant (if you want a change from local food). The Venezia is a 25 minute walk from the Malika Classic hotel or a 5,000 Som taxi ride for 2 people.

1) Elenora at Reception was very pleasant, helpful and has good English. The male staff were uncommunicative and unhelpful.
2) The building itself is attractive and has two spacious courtyards. These are kept spotlessly clean by the group of friendly women who work at the hotel.
3) The side that is away from the street and in the second courtyard was certainly the quietest while we were there.
4) The breakfasts were varied and substantial.
5) The courtyard was a good place to relax in the evenings. Even though a tour group arrived while we were there people were driven off for the evening meal and on return tended to go to their rooms.

1) Bottled water was not supplied on arrival but could be bought quite cheaply at reception.
2) The rooms were relatively large and clean but very basic and the bed was saggy and lumpy. Shower water was sometimes intermittent.
3) Wi-Fi was available but ran like molasses.
4) Some rooms had a safe but it was not secured and could be easily carried away.
5) Reception does not have VISA facilities.

Good Hotel if you have transporation

The hotel is in a quiet residential area and is quite far from the sites, luckily our group had a van to take us out. The room we had was very spacious however the bathroom was very tiny. The water pressure was weak and it only got better during our last day. Breakfast was buffet and had a choice of fruit, cereal, bread and eggs. The overall ambience was cozy with two beautiful courtyards. There's a cherry tree in one and we were allowed to pick some. The staff was very friendly and laundry service was reliable. If you have transportation available at all times, this is a good place to stay at.

Excellent private hotel in residential Samarkand

For our group of 11 people, this local hotel, designed with exquisitely carved support beams and doors. was an excellent choice. The rooms were clean and well appointed. The front desk and dining room service was enthusiastic and friendly. The dining room offered an embellished breakfast buffet in a charming setting. This private hotel is located in a residential area, which for us was fine as we had a comprehensive sightseeing program everyday with a driver, guide and a coach. A few in our group took taxis into town for a taste of night life.
I would definitely stay here again.

Nice hotel but a little far away from the sites

Stayed here for three nights as part of a group tour of Uzbekistan. As we were on a group tour we had a bus with us so the location was not really a problem except that if we wanted to explore independently that would have been more difficult. The rooms are a nice size but the hot water was not entirely reliable. Breakfast was good and we were there at Easter when they produced a stunning easter cake for breakfast!

Attractive place to stay in Samarkand.

Large, clean and modern rooms. Good location in city. Functioning WiFi. Friendly staff. Large and nice patio, good for enjoying a glass of Uzbek wine (some of which are interesting, some even decent). Mattresses slightly on the too hard side. Quiet.

Great property in a bad location

I think the reviews are pretty unanimous on this one. The Malika Samarkand is great but in a very inconvenient location. Expect to take taxis everywhere other than the immediate residential neighborhood (which is not entirely without charm).

Despite the bad location, the pluses on this one are many: 1. attractive islamic-style courtyard and use of local design elements. 2. comfortable rooms with outdoor seating areas (for rooms on the 2nd floor). 3. reasonably good breakfast. 4. friendly staff. 5. daybeds and table service in the courtyard which make it a nice place to relax at the end of a long day.

This is a distinctive property in a bad location. The only other negative other than the location is that there is no internet access available at the property.

All-in-all, I would choose the Malika again but I would greatly favor something similar in the center of town (if it was available).
