The international photographic contest "Water is Life", held among the Central and Eastern European countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States, took place from May to September 2003. It was organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe, UNDP in Uzbekistan, the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan and the Tashkent House of Photography, in co-sponsorship with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Steinert Industries Company.
Dedicated to the International Year of Freshwater 2003, the contest aimed to draw public attention to the essential importance of water for human development and the preservation of the ecosystem, and to promote a more sustainable use of water resources in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the CIS.
The contest received over 1,000 color and black and white entries from 19 countries of the region as well as from India, Italy, China, USA, Thailand, and France. The images taken by professional and amateur photographers, young and old alike, offer an infinite variety of perceptions of the connection between water and life. They reveal that water is the most precious element of life on Earth, a natural resource indispensable not only for global ecosystems but also for human civilization itself.
