Description
Lahic village is home to the minority Tat people, distinguished by their unique language and world-famous craftsmanship. The village itself is one of the oldest in Azerbaijan, a popular Silk Road destination dating back to the 5th century BC and famous today for its ancient sewage system and earthquake-resistant architecture. Nearby, the city of Shamakhi, former capital of the Shirvanshah Empire, holds the country’s oldest mosque.

Tour Itinerary
Your private guide and driver will meet you at your Baku hotel. Drive to Shamakhi (180km, 2hrs 30min).
On the way, stop at Diri Baba Mausoleum (15th century), located in the village of Maraza. This unique two-story monument, carved into a rocky cliff as a unique display of Shirvan-Absheron architecture, is shrouded in legend and may be explored both inside and out.
Continue driving to ancient Shamakhi, former seat of the Shirvanshah Empire, to visit:
- Juma Mosque (8th century), the oldest mosque in Azerbaijan whose ancient Islamic architecture and interior stone columns, unparalleled in the country, create an aura of antiquity.
- Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum (19th century), burial site of the last khan of Shamakhi. While only three of the original graves remain, their unusual shape and panoramic overview of the city combine to create a memorable local landmark.
Drive through the breathtaking Girdimanchay River Valley to the small alpine village of Lahic (60km, 1hr 15min), situated 2000 meters above sea level. Explore this ancient cobblestone village filled with traditional workshops and uniquely built homes. Shop for unique copperware, leather, jewelry, iron tools, carpets, pottery and daggers as local artisans demonstrate their techniques.
Tour the Lahic History Museum, where you can learn about the lifestyle of Azerbaijan’s people throughout the centuries while enjoying a picturesque view of the area.
