Georgia regions

Svaneti, one of the most timeless and lovely provinces of Georgia, is situated at the mouth of the Enguri River, among awe-inspiring mountains, and is the most populated highland region. The village of Ushguli, is the highest populated place in Europe (at 2,200 meters above sea level). It is also the most difficult to access, as it is the most isolated region of Georgia.

During the numerous raids of various invaders, Georgia's kings hid sacred treasures and valuable manuscripts in Svaneti. Here in Svaneti, embossed icons, relief crosses and the oldest Georgian Biblical manuscripts have been preserved.

Proudly located here are amazing, beautiful towers which once defended the region. One could see an enemy approaching from their turrets, and they were built very strong to protect the defenders. They were also used to communicate, as fire was used send messages from tower to tower. One can peer into an ancient, patriarchal mode of life, as these traditions, customs and habits continue in Svaneti even today. Christian holidays remain tinged with pagan qualities to this day. The Svaneti mountaintops Ushba, Tetnuldi, Shkhara, and Shkhelda are extremely challenging to climb. Thus, they attract many expert mountaineers, the majority of whom are from the region. Mikhail Khergiani, nicknamed the Rock Tiger, was born there.
