Independence Park, Ashgabat
In the southern part of Ashgabat, you'll find the city's main park – the National Independence Park. It's a major attraction of the capital, home to several symbols of modern independent Turkmenistan, including the impressive Independence Monument, the monument to the book "Ruhnama", and bronze sculptures of many great historical figures.
The park spans an area of 140 hectares, with dimensions of 800x1750 meters. It's covered in lush greenery, making up half of Ashgabat's total greenery. You'll find a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, along with numerous flowerbeds.
The centerpiece of Independence Park is the Independence Monument, which soars 118 meters into the sky. The base is designed as a massive Turkmen yurt, housing a small museum dedicated to Turkmenistan's independence. Above the yurt rises a powerful white marble column topped with a golden crescent moon and five stars, symbolizing the unity of the five Turkmen tribes. The monument is adorned with many decorative gilded elements.
Another notable feature is the enormous "Ruhnama" book monument, standing over 5 meters tall. This monument honors the principal work of Turkmenistan's first president, Saparmurat Niyazov. The book, considered a philosophical moral treatise, is studied in schools, and all citizens are expected to know its content. Behind the Ruhnama monument is a spacious amphitheater for concerts and cultural events.
In addition to these highlights, Independence Park also features a gilded statue of the first president and bronze figures with golden elements dedicated to other significant figures in Turkmenistan's history. In the northern part of the park, there's a large shopping and entertainment center, "Altyn Asyr", shaped like a five-pointed pyramid.
Independence Park is a fantastic place to immerse yourself in the ideals of modern Turkmenistan. You'll capture many memorable photos of your trip to Ashgabat. In the evening, the park is beautifully illuminated with numerous lanterns, lamps, and spotlights, creating a stunning white and golden display that leaves a lasting impression on even the most seasoned travelers.
