Description

The Ancient Fortresses of Khorezm Tour will bring you face-to-face with an area well-known by historians and archeologists for the remains of thousands of fortresses and palaces dotting the landscape. The birthplace of Zoroastrianism and such notable medieval scholars as al-Khorezm and Abu Rayhan Beruniy, Khorezm region has seen thousands of years of invaders, traveling merchants, slave-traders and warriors.
While most tourists who manage to travel as far as western Uzbekistan are sure to explore the city of Khiva, the surrounding area can often be passed over due to complications with travel or limited time. On your tour of the fortresses of historical Khorezm, your professional guide will not only transport you to each location but explain to you the history in greater detail, ensuring that you get to experience firsthand this fascinating aspect of Uzbekistan’s history.

Program

Tour Itinerary

In the morning your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Khiva. Begin your day trip to ancient Khorezm in the Kyzylkum Desert (2-hour trip one-way, 140 km). You’ll visit each of the archaeological monuments of the Desert Castles of Ancient Khorezm in the Ellik Kala (Fifty Fortresses) region:

  • Kyzyl-Kala (Red Fortress), a remnant of antique history from the Kushan dynasty;
  • Toprak-Kala (Earthen Fortress), one of the most unique monuments in all Khorezm due to its size and architecture. You’ll have the chance to explore this ancient settlement, which served as the capital of Khorezm in the 3rd century AD;
  • Kirk-Kyz Kala (Fortress of Forty Virgins) - a fortress dating back to the 1st-6th centuries AD and believed to be part of ancient Khorezm’s border defense system;
  • Ayaz-Kala - one of the largest fortresses in Khorezm, this fortress complex dates back to the height of the Kushan Empire in the 2nd century AD. Here you can also visit a yurt camp and go for a camel ride.

We are back home, in Belgium. With this Message we, Martine and myself, would like to express our satisfaction about the organization and the follow up in the field, by you.
Guides and drivers were top. A big bravo for Anvar driver, what a Guy!!!
We had a very interesting and well-hidden tour in Tashkent.
The visit of the tree fortress of Khorezm and the stay in the Yurt camp was great, Fine Experience.
Tour in Khiva was well organized and our guide was good…
Fantastic day in Buchara with our guide Mansur.
The swim in the Aydarkul lake fantastic.
Accommodations in all places, top, with one little disappointment at the Fergana grand hotel, because dinner, was not possible due to a private party! The hotel in Samarkand, is rich in the middle of the town, which is very convenient.

We are now back in Italy and we would like to thank you for the support given. The visit of Ellik Kala area was very interesting and the night under the stars at the camp very exciting. It was very helpful to have a driver speaking a good English: if you have the chance, please give our greetings to Bahriyor and his father. All the best & kind regards.

We would like to say thank you that our travel in Uzbekistan was a fantastic journey. There were some thinks that I would like to comment:
Hotel Boutique Amelia in Bukhara is excellent hotel for location, staff, comfort, breakfast...
Homestay in Chimgan at Rosa Miralieva house was fantastic Rosa is an excellent cooker and all the family are very nice, and we stay there like in our house.
The visit to Aral Sea takes 10 hours from Nukus to Aral Sea and the 9 hours from Aral Sea to Moynak then Moynak to Nukus and then to Khiva, that makes a very long journey. In spite we enjoy, the night in the beach was very nice, Maybe is not necessarily go as far as we went. I think it's possible to stop at the beginning of the waters of the Aral Sea.
P.S. If we return to Central Asia, we no doubt to contact another time with OrexCA.com

I want to compliment you on the excellent service you gave us for our group's trip to Khoresm and Karakalpakistan in April 2006. First, your website is impressive. You keep it current, offer detailed, accurate information with correct English and use great graphics and design. Then, when I wrote you an email, you answered all my questions promptly, which haven't had a local agency do before. Finally, your ability to do everything I asked was greatly appreciated. For instance, I wanted our gals on one floor and the guys on another and you made sure this happened. Thank you so much. And you were so flexible when we were all able to get on the earlier flight and therefore had to shift all our plans by 6 hours. Wow, we are so thankful we didn't have to sit at the Urgench Airport that whole time. Thank you, thank you for your QUICK work.
I did not expect your agent Jahongir to assist us in Khoresm. Yet, he called to see how we were doing at the yurts, on the bus, and in Nukus. Then, he met us at the Hotel Arkonchi to get us settled in, and it was his birthday! He went beyond his duty by being our tour guide the next day when the one had previously arranged could not come. He was perfect for our group of teenagers - catering the historical stories to what they would be interested in and not boring them at all! I wish he had been available for another tour in the afternoon.
All the meals that he arranged for us were excellent and he was able to get the local foods I had specifically requested with plenty of salads and drinks at a reasonable cost. We really appreciated this unexpected service.
I will highly recommend your agency to anyone in need of travel assistance in the future. We, of course, will use you for all our travel needs as well; it is great to find excellent service in Uzbekistan.
